Title: War3 Model Editor
Post by: Magos on January 20, 2008, 10:32:36 AM
War3 Model Editor is as the name suggests a Model Viewer and a Model Editor dedicated to Warcraft 3. It supports both loading and saving of *.mdl and *.mdx model formats which are used in Warcraft 3. It also supports *.bmp, *.tga, *.png, *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.pcx and *.blp texture formats.

There is a buildt-in MPQ Browser that allows you to browse any MPQ archive, which also includes Warcraft 3 map files (*.w3m and *w3x). The MPQ Browser has been optimized for speed and is very fast to load and use. The MPQ Browser is customizable so you can add/remove your own icons and filters.

For those who knows C++ I've implemented a DLL-interface for model importing so you can write your own model importer DLL's (for other formats than those I've supplied). Check out the link at the bottom of the page and the docs for more information.

Don't expect this program to be in the same league as 3DStudio or the other leading commercial products. It was created as a simple (and free) alternative!

See the included help-file for more information!

As for the missing d3dx9_35.dll problem you may want to check out this site (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/d3dx9_35dll-dll.htm) or this site (http://www.downloadatoz.com/howto/How-to-resolve-d3dx935-dll-not-found-error.html).

Features
  • Model Viewer
  • Model Editor
  • Geoset Importing/Exporting
  • Can save/load the model formats *.mdl and *.mdx
  • Can save/load the texture formats *.bmp, *.tga, *.png, *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.pcx and *.blp
  • Can import other model formats (importers stored in DLLs)
  • Ability to convert between the model formats
  • Ability to convert between the texture formats
  • MPQ Browser (very fast loading)
  • Support for custom listfiles
  • Support for custom MPQ filters & icons

Extras
  • Loading Screen Creator
  • A tool to create colored text for Warcraft 3

Supported Importers
  • md2 (Quake 2)
  • ms3d (Milkshape)

Not yet Implemented
  • Geoset Editor
  • Rendering Ribbon Emitters

Known Bugs
  • Some transformations in combination with billboards are not correct!

Hello there Magos!

I have been using this model editor of yours for a long while and it certainly is very good and useful.

But I have noticed one small bug: whenever you try to change the "Rotation" value of any node, it doesn't quite work as it is supposed to. It always moves the values or something...

So for example if I would have rotation values:
Code:
1000: { 1, 2, 3, 4 }
2000: { 1, 2, 3, 4 }
3000: { 1, 2, 3, 4 }
it would look like this after pressing "ok":
Code:
1000: { 1, 2, 4, 0 }
2000: { 1, 2, 4, 0 }
3000: { 1, 2, 4, 0 }
if I would look at the rotation values again and press ok, the result would be:
Code:
1000: { 1, 2, 0, 0 }
2000: { 1, 2, 0, 0 }
3000: { 1, 2, 0, 0 }

it seems to always move the 4th value to replace the 3rd value

But other than that, it is a great and useful tool for wc3 modding!

That is indeed a strange bug I just checked and confirmed. Thanks for reporting it, sadly I doubt War3ModelEditor won't get any more updates. I prolly won't work on a modelling program until StarCraft 2 is released (hint hint ^^).

HELP ME...................................................................

1) Make sure you've extracted the files (DO NOT run the exe directly from the zip archive)
2) Make sure there's a subfolder called "Data" which has a lot of files in it, including "SplatData.txt".

This may seem like a very stupid question, but where can you find these model files?

You can get Blizzard's official models directly from the game. Enter the MPQ Browser and open either War3.mpq or War3x.mpq. Look for any model files (mdl or mdx) then double-click to open. It's easier to find them if you set the filter to only show models (instead of all files).

Alternatively you can open external model files others have made through File -> Open. You must download them to your computer/HD first.

rotations are suppose to be inquaternions, you know? that could be the reason of the bug. But even though of it, I wrote some quaternion keys and that bug still kept coming; btw magos since you may work on other tool for sc2, why don't you just make an improved version of this one which supports SC 2? WoW art tools & format were just an updated version of Wc3 Art Tools, I imagine that Sc 2 format will be similar to Wc3's model format.

I quickly looked thorugh the source and at some point I noticed I saved the vector (quaternion) as X,Y,W,W instead of X,Y,Z,W thus explaining the bug :)

The basic model engine in this program is really lacking which is the main reason I never bothered making more updates. I started working on a new improved version but as with many other projects it never got finished (time, energy, interest, yada yada). Besides, at this point the interest in war3 modding has cooled so I see no point in investing lots of time in a new version.
I will make a serious attempt at a better editor when SC2 arrives though  8)

It seems to be an unsupported tag in that model. What model is it and where did you get it? Any chance you could use another model?

My program does not support that tag. I googled around to find some info but couldn't find anything, it seems 'KP2R' is a non-existing tag. I suggest contacting the original author of that model (Daelin @ http://www.hiveworkshop.com).

Title: Well can I submit a problem here ?
Post by: Need_O2 on March 31, 2008, 06:41:11 AM
Thing is I wanted to have some experiment with oinkerwinkle tools
I imported 3 geosets to a bandit and made some changes
Model is fine in War3 Model Editor  (I use for mdl-mdx converting) but crashes on a map when loading
(whenever it tries to load model)
When I try to convert with yobguls mdl-mdx converter
It works in game but One of Geosets gets invisible in "AnimationS" (lol) And all materials alpha is non-animated 1

Say "ABCDEFG" if this has nothing to do with War3 Model Editor
or "This has nothing to do with War3 Model Editor"

Sorry I cant post the model right now (some complicated situation)

Title: Re: War3 Model Editor
Post by: Magos on April 01, 2008, 12:30:51 AM
It could be a problem with geoset animations, they're badly connected, there's too many (some geoanims are not connected to geosets) or too few (some geosets have no geoanims, not sure if this is bad though).

I have models with me now
http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65101
you can find them in this post (didnt want to use server space here)

Possible to make a fixer plugin for war3 model editor (or another application) ?
Or got any manual ways ?

-----------------------------
Part 2 (lol)
I (everyone I guess) would like to have an animation coppier
Example: Copy from 21000 to 21000 to 52000 to 65000 (yea it will scale <optional lol>) for specify bones

-----------------------------
Edit: LoL sorry I never tought to look at geoset anims anyway some friend helped me to fix
Forget the plugin thing up there xD

Dear Magos,

I love your tool! Big fan! Is there absolutely no chance of you updating this program? Even if we ask you very nicely? ^^ Its such a great program and i have used it a lot!

Would be great even if you just released a small update  ;D! Haha! Its up to you, but am actually writing to ask you if you could help me. For some reason when I edit the Blizzard BETA Battleship model and then try save it the program gives error message: "Unknown error has occured." Other models work fine. Any clue to what is wrong?

I've made attempts at making a version 2, however they've never finished. It's a huge project which requires lots of time and dedication, which I haven't had enough of so far. Parts of the original source code has been lost too so it's not easy to make updates.

"Unknown error" is far too unspecfic to know what caused it, sorry.

Believe it or not but after all these years a new version is available (1.07). Don't get your hopes up too high, it is just bug fixes for some annoying things in previous versions.

  • Texture file is no longer required to open a model (missing textures will be black)
  • War3 MPQ files are no longer required to start War3ModelEditor
  • Fixed interpolation X/Y/Z/W mixup
  • Fixed particle emitter 2 width/length mixup (I think, hasn't been properly tested)
  • MDX files now skips unknown tags instead of throwing an error

I'm glad You upgraded it, but can You by any chance provide link to earlier version?
I accidentally removed it, and with the new one I can't open for example:
war3x.mpq:UI\Glues\SpriteLayers\Expansion\TopLeftPanel-Expansion.mdx
It makes crash on opening and im pretty sure it could be opened by earlier version.

I do understand Your feelings towards continuing development of "dying" scene, when SC2 is coming with so many potential, but if You got any spare time, then remember that after few next years You program will still be the only one :D

Hm, that model opens fine for me (in v1.07). Maybe try redownload the editor in case something got corrupt. Note that the model itself is very tiny, barely visible even if you zoom in to the max.

Title: Re: War3 Model Editor
Post by: wiewior on October 11, 2008, 04:34:39 PM
Yea, i know that, but small size wasn't really problem because all i wanted was to shorten sequences time for faster w3 menu :) (btw: there aint any option for setting max zoom?)
I allready found 1.05 and it worked fine.  (Also I had similar bug, when older 1.05 could open from path containing non english character, and 1.07 couldnt, but i guess its not this)
Anyway thanks for caring.

Your question is confusing.
If you're attempting to animate from scratch then I suggest not using war3modeleditor. Though technically possible, it requires entering transformations manually which is hard and time consuming.
Go to http://www.hiveworkshop.com or http://www.wc3c.net and check out the modelling forums.

Looks like a nice program.
Could you help me with something? I tried to edit a model, starbase.
I found how to rotate it around the mass point, but I also want to animate it... and I can't really find it how.
I've read that you need bones or something?
I think I do those in Node Manager, but I can't see how...
You previously discouraged someone from doing an animation from scratch with this program, but all I want is to rotate it... Around the "secondary" Z axis (I rotated it on the Y or X I don't remember).
I'm trying to mimic the motion and position of a starbase in star trek.
Thank you for the assistance in advance. :)

Title: Re: War3 Model Editor
Post by: Magos on July 01, 2009, 09:36:59 AM
Node Manager -> Right-click node -> Edit Node -> Rotation.
You have to specify each track node by hand. Rotations are expressed as quaternions, so if you don't know quaternions I'm afraid you're on slippery ice :).
Make sure you run the latest version, as there was some bugs in the animation editor.

Title: Re: War3 Model Editor
Post by: TheWatcher on July 01, 2009, 11:50:38 PM
I'm using  1.07.

Sadly I don't know Quaternions (although I'm looking into them right now).
Is there anywhere some highly detailed yet easily understood tutorial to fit the needs of a basic user like me?
Or, can I request it? I really just need the rotation... and only on this one.

By the way, after rotating the model, will the blp texture file still fit it?

EDIT: Hmm, these Quaternions are tough... Is there an existing model that does the same? I tried bladestorm but didn't see anything relevant. :\

Title: Re: War3 Model Editor
Post by: Magos on July 02, 2009, 09:56:50 AM
I suggest visiting http://www.wc3c.net/ or http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/news.php as I'm more of a programmer than a modeller ;).
Don't know what you mean by "fit in", but a texture is generally not affected by transformations.

Title: Re: War3 Model Editor
Post by: TheWatcher on July 03, 2009, 01:43:50 AM
I visited both, and all the tutorials I found was with other programs than war3 model editor :\

As far as I've seen, modeling and programing is not so different x_x

I'm experimenting with random number sequences in the node editor - rotation, but it's pretty messed up... The model shrinks or grows, or just becomes some slim thing not even resembling the original one lol.
Is it possible to have the texture(skin) on the model in the editor?
Bones are quite elusive too... are there any other/better ways to place bones, other than defining it's point with X Y Z? Because it's hard to see what value is the best...
Disturbing, how I just one a simple rotation, and it's so difficult :\

Yea texture works fine

Textures in the (standard) mpq's are found automatically. If you have a texture "MyFolder\MyTexture.blp" then it has to be located relative where the program is (like C:\War3ModelEditor\MyFolder\MyTexture.blp) or relative to where you opened the model (like C:\MyModels\MyFolder\MyTexture.blp).

Sorry. Good pick/drag-n-drop features are hard to implement. There is a reason why good modelling programs costs 999999$ :).

Where do I find a tutorial on animating with quaternions t_t

Why is it I can only set that rotation thing for the default one bone (that came with the model)?
Doesn't matter where I put a new one in nodemanager, even if I duplicated it, it doesn't do a thing

It is possible to only get that file, however having DirectX version 0.9c at least would work. Just add that file into System32 and you are done, however it is recommended you do a web install so that it remains stable during the process with any problems aside.

I have a problem, every time I re-install or even try to open, it gives me this message: "Your system does not support linear mip-map filters!"

please help!
And if you can,
Thanx

What graphics card do you have? The editor uses a feature called "linear filters" and it seems your card does not support them. Nothing I can do, sorry.

Howdy Magos. Let, me begin by saying, i am a big fan. your program really got me interested in modeling. And despite it's fault's i still find your model editor invaluable for wc3 modeling. Many people have asked you if you will update the model editor and you have politely declined many times. Despite that dissapointment, i really admire that you continue to answer questions, it speaks volumes of your character/dedication. But, back on topic... could you look into the following bugs for the future SC2 modeling program?

1. There seems to be a rather odd glitch concerning Camera movement. In the Camera manager, there is a field to create animated camera translation and rotation but the keyframes for these fields will not write onto .mdl format models. And an mdx format with these fields filled in, will not save.

2. The Geoset animation manager allows you to put in "linear" visibility, allowing for smooth transitions to color and visibility of geosets, but that smooth transition does not show up in the editor. It works ingame, but for the sc2version it would be appreciated. I don't know if that would be a coding thing or if it has to do more with the rendering engine for the program.

3. Again, im not sure if this would have to do with the programming or the rendering engine. But tail particles are not visible in the editor, despite there being editable fields for it. It would make particle emitter creation much easier.

4. It is possible to create Texture animations and assign them to materials in the editor, but when you save the file as either mdx or mdl, the reference erases itself. the Texture animation is still there, in the texture animation manager, but the material will no longer reference it. As such you have to put "TVertexAnimId 0," in the mdl code manually if you want a material to have a texture animation (i.e. animated tank treads)

5. When creating new sequences, in the sequence manager, they do not "smart-save" in the correct order. As such, the sequence you create will show up in the code (mdl) in the order you created them. However, if you have created the sequences out of order (like creating a sequence with interval 300-400 after creating 2 sequences with  100-200 and 500-600 intervals) then wc3 will read the sequence keyframes in a linear order ingame. So the out of order sequence will not show up properly ingame (i.e. the 300-400 interval sequence will not play properly but the 100-200 and 500-600 sequence will be fine)

ex.
[sequence:
100-200
500-600
300-400]

... i think there were a few other tiny glitches but i guess that's it for now
Sorry if i sound nitpicky. :P I love the program and i still use it for every model i make. But i cant wait to see the SC2 model editor, and i hope it'll be the best it can be.

Sincerely Anarchianbedlam,

P.S. You can find me on the hiveworkshop (same Sn), but ill log on here when i can

1, 4) Yes there are some bugs and naturally I want potential future editors to be as bug free as possible :). I never heard of the animated camera bug before.

2, 3) The main problem here is that I can only guess how Blizzard coded their effects, and the end result may differ from how it looks in war3. Tail particles (and ribbon emitters for that matter) have complicated math I never figured out, so they were never implemented. Let's start a petition to release SC2 sourcecode as open source :).

5) A feature to reorder sequences (or any object type) would be useful here, I see.

Thanks for posting. I'll consider these in future projects.

Oh! there was another thing. I am really happy that in version 1.07 you fixed the (X,Y,Z,W) rotation glitch, however i think that somehow, a new glitch was introduced. Because when billboarding a bone that is a child to a rotated parent node. The billboarded plane will skew and rotate with the parent node. (say i had a circle billboarded so it looked like a sphere; if the parent node rotated, then the plane with the circle on it would become uneven) This only shows up in version 1.07 but not in version 1.05. the billboarded child node acts normal ingame. It only skews in v1.07. Iono why, just thought that i would point it out.

Desktop\Data\SplatData.txt
Try placing it in a "real" folder like C:\War3ModelEditor instead of on the desktop :)
Also make sure you have rights (read and write) to the folder, especially if you run Vista. Or run as admin.

Hey guys. For those of you that are getting the "gray box" when you open the editor, I read on the HiveWorkship comments for this editor that desktop themes can cause this issue. I was using AlienGuise and turned it off - Editor loads properly. I hope this helps someone. Thanks Magos, for this tool.

Wow. Such an old thread appears to be remaining active after all this time :P

First of all, I must say that this has been a vital program for my modeling process for wc3. Very well done. But I came across a problem that I have not found solutions to on the internet. I use Milkshape when modeling, and that program seems to work perfectly fine for me without problems. It even has the MDX/MDL importer/Exporter applied to it so I can model for Warcraft. Today, I was animating one of my projects, and I came across an interesting error. When I exported the model, the model's animations would be messed up in Magos, and Warcraft Viewer (I tried both to make sure it wasn't just Magos) Sometimes, it would be fine, but the more anims I added to the model, the more bugged the anims got in Magos. All this from a simple exporting the model into mdx/mdl, while Milkshape showed no problems witht he anims under any circumstance.

With this in mind, I went to another program, Warshape, to check the anims again. (Warshape helps more with viewing the anims rather than just the model) Upon viewing it in this program, the same files I had exported the model as were prefectly fine, with no errors in the anims. It seemed that Magos, and Wc3 Viewer both had a problem with the anims of the model, while another 3rd party tool did not. Do you know what could possibly be causing these errors, as well as possibly a way to bypass or fix this problem?

varsaigen: Hard to tell. Since Blizzard hasn't (and probably never will) released their source code for War3, all we can do is guess how they coded their animations. It's hard to make it look exactly like in War3.

Man, your apps and engines as wonderfull !!
but i have a question.
It's possible to convert MDX models with animations into Quake MD2 animated models?
If this is possible, do you give me a light?

thanks and congratulations for your work.
